Prepare a project handoff from your work history
A good handoff helps another person continue the work without replaying your entire week. It needs the current artifact, the decisions that shaped it, the unresolved items and a clear next step.
Your work history can help you locate those details. The handoff itself should be a deliberate document you review before sharing.
Identify what the next person needs to do
Begin with the task being handed over. “Review the draft” requires different context from “finish the implementation” or “take over client communication”.
Write a one-sentence purpose at the top of your note. Then include only the context that helps someone perform that task.
This prevents a handoff from becoming an unfiltered activity report.
Find the current sources
Open the latest deliverable and confirm its location, revision and access requirements. Use CiteSilo’s local document search or project-tagged activity to locate supporting material when needed.
A source found in history may be an old copy. Check it against the project’s current records before putting it in the handoff.
If a retained capture is unavailable, find another authoritative source or label the detail as unresolved.
Explain decisions with their evidence
For each important decision, state what was chosen and where the agreement is recorded. Do not convert a page you viewed or an option you researched into a confirmed decision.
For example, “reviewed three hosting options” is different from “selected the hosting provider”. The second statement needs the actual decision record.
Include rejected options only when they explain a constraint the next person would otherwise rediscover.
Describe the unfinished edge
List open questions, known blockers and the next concrete action. Make dependencies explicit: who or what is needed, and which part of the work depends on it.
Use a simple structure in your own document:
- Current deliverable and source location.
- Verified decisions and constraints.
- Open work and known risks.
- Next action and the input it requires.
CiteSilo can help retrieve context; it does not automatically send this handoff or establish ownership of the next task.
Check access and confidentiality
A file path on your computer may not be usable by a colleague. Replace local-only references with an approved shared location where appropriate, and confirm access through your normal process.
Remove unrelated client names, private window titles and source excerpts that should not leave your computer. Share the minimum context needed for the task.
Finally, read the handoff as someone who was not present. If the next action is still unclear, add the missing decision or source rather than more activity detail.
See source verification and resuming a project after time away for the same evidence checks from the receiving side.
